Being pregnant does not spare you from acquiring infectious diseases. In fact, it may even pose you for risk of infection due to changes brought about by hormones during pregnancy. One of the infections that a pregnant woman may encounter is urinary tract infection or UTI during pregnancy.
UTI is common during pregnancy. It is because the uterus sits directly on top of the bladder as a result of changes in the urinary tract during pregnancy. When the uterus grows, this may cause blockage of the drainage as a result of the increased weight.
UTI during pregnancy has similar symptoms like when you are not pregnant. Some of them are pain or burning sensation when urinating, blood or mucus in the urine, feeling of urgency to urinate, urine looks cloudy and may have odor, pain or tenderness in the bladder area.
If you suspect urinary tract infection, you should consult your medical practitioner in the soonest time possible. This is to avoid the bacteria from causing kidney problems that can affect the development of the baby in the womb. Also kidney infection can cause early birth or low birth weight.
To diagnose UTI during pregnancy, urinalysis will be requested and sometimes, even urine culture.
Urinary tract infection during pregnancy can be treated safely with antibiotics. You should however ask your physician on your health limitations. Most often, doctors give a 3-7 days treatment for UTI during pregnancy to make sure that the dosage does not affect the baby.
Here are some of the measures you can take in order to avoid urinary tract infection during pregnancy:
1. Drink at least 6 to 8 glasses of water daily.
2. When wiping after bowel movement, wipe from front to back.
3. Avoid using bath tubs when taking a bath, use showers instead.
4. Develop the habit of urinating as soon as possible and empty your bladder when urinating.
5. Wear cotton underwear or pantyhose.
The risk of having urinary tract infection or UTI during pregnancy can be minimize with proper hygiene and taking the precautionary measures that has been mentioned above. See your doctor regularly during pregnancy to monitor your health and the development of your baby.
